Growth & Profitability

Revenue growth, earnings growth, margins and return on equity — signs of a healthy, expanding business.

In Simple Words

Growth shows whether a company is expanding its sales and profits. Profitability shows how efficiently it turns sales into profit. Both matter: a company can grow fast but lose money, or be profitable but stagnant.

Why It Matters

Sustainable long-term returns usually come from companies that grow profitably over many years.

Key Terms

How fast sales are increasing, usually year-over-year.

EPS (earnings per share)

Profit divided by the number of shares. EPS growth shows rising profit per share.

Profit kept from each dollar of sales, as a percentage.

Return on equity (ROE)

Profit generated from shareholders' equity. A measure of efficiency.

How to Interpret It

If revenue grows 30% but margins are shrinking, growth may be bought with discounts that won't last. If ROE is consistently above 15%, the company is usually using capital well.

Beginner Mistakes

  • Celebrating revenue growth while ignoring losses.
  • Comparing margins across very different industries without context.
